Pulama I Ka ‘Ohana (PIKO) Program

With special attention to children, the Pulama I Ka Ohana (PIKO) Program supports island families to overcome challenges together.  PIKO accompanies survivors of domestic violence and their children on their path to safety and healing, through individual and family services and support groups.

Individual and Family Services

Each survivor in the PIKO Program receives the personalized assistance of a PIKO Advocate. The Advocate helps with:

  • Safety Planning
  • Crisis Support
  • Domestic Violence Education
  • Court Accompaniment
  • Navigating Community Resources

Survivors and their children also benefit from individual and family (parent-child) counseling from our PIKO Therapist and Counselors. The PIKO Attorney and Paralegal provide professional and supportive legal representation, for families who need it.

Support Groups

PIKO Support Groups are a safe and comfortable way for moms and kids to learn and grow. From toddlers to teens, groups promote healing and nurture the bond between parents and children. Parents at group benefit from domestic violence education, strengthen positive parenting and communication skills, and develop valuable self-care techniques. Meanwhile, children play, make new friends, and have the opportunity to engage in exciting cultural activities with their parent and siblings.

Support groups are a great way to connect with other parents and families. It is said that it takes a village to raise a child.  At the Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC), the PIKO Program creates that village for Hawaii’s families!

PIKO services include:

  • Legal representation in Family Court for divorce, custody, protection orders, post decree and paternity matters
  • Advocacy for survivors, including assistance in finding housing, income, healthcare, and childcare
  • Court accompaniment and support for survivors seeking protection orders and/or serving as witnesses in abuse cases
  • Support and counseling for adult and children suffering from abuse
  • Support groups
